FORNEY, Texas – The Forney Fire Department and surrounding agencies fought a large and fast-moving pasture fire south of U.S. Highway 80 near the Gateway Bridge development. The fire was reported at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Friday afternoon, June 20, 2014, and a majority of the fire was contained by 4 p.m.

According to Kaufman County Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Woosley, approximately 60 acres burned and was likely caused by a piece of metal in the field that was struck by a tractor's mowing blade. The spark from the impact caught the hay on fire. The piece of metal was described as a three-eights piece of steel approximately 15 inches in length.

Southern containment of the fire prevented it from threatening homes on the south side of County Road 212. The fire was generally located between U.S. Highway 80, County Road 212, and the Gateway Bridge.

The Forney Fire Department received assistance from the Forney Volunteer Fire Department, the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, and the Crandall Volunteer Fire Department. The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office and Emergency Management Office were on scene. An East Texas Medical Center ambulance provided rehab for the firefighters.
