TERRELL, Texas (Terrell Police Department) — Finding awesome buys on the many electronic classified advertisement websites today can be a cost-efficient and beneficial experience for both the seller and the buyer.

However, as with any other good thing, criminal offenders find ways to exploit these markets for criminal gain. All too frequently, an otherwise innocent person finds they were duped into a compromising situation by a crook looking to take from others. As a result, many people pass on the great deals they see on these websites, opting instead not to risk putting themselves in a bad situation.

In response to this issue, the Terrell Police Department has planned an Internet Safe Exchange Zone in the parking lot of the new police facility, being constructed at 1100 N. State Highway 34, in Terrell. The Internet Safe Exchange feature provides two side-by-side parking spaces; both marked by signs, directly in front of the Terrell Police Headquarters and are specifically designed to guard against crimes associated with such transactions. The area is well lighted and video-recorded, as well as monitored, by a high- quality surveillance system, 24 hour per day, 365 days per year.

Police recommend citizens conducting either buying or selling transactions tell their prospect they will meet them in the Internet Safe Exchange Zone at the Terrell Police Department. Although police encourage these transaction be conducted in the light of day, making the exchange at this location ensures the prospect will know police are readily available and for the more brazen offender, the entire transaction will be recorded on the high-resolution digital surveillance system.

“We wanted to provide our citizens this service, as we continue seeking ways of working together to keep our community safe,” said Chief Jody L. Lay. “Providing the Internet Safe Exchange Zone for our citizens was simply a no-brainer. I am pleased we were able to add that feature to the facility,” said the Chief.

The Terrell Police Department will occupy the new facility in mid-February of 2017. Citizens can expect the Internet Safe Exchange Zone to be up and operating very soon.
