HEARTLAND, Texas — An off-duty Crandall Fire Department firefighter, a woman, and a young girl are credited with saving the life of a toddler on Tuesday night in a near-drowning incident at the Heartland community pool.

The Crandall Fire Department responded to the Heartland community pool just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday for a reported drowning of a toddler with CPR in progress.

Crandall Fire Department Chief Allen Cousins says, prior to firefighters arrival, the toddler’s older sister pulled her from the pool where an off-duty Crandall firefighter was also swimming and began CPR.

Cousins says the firefighter, Cassie Leann, checked and could not find a pulse and began CPR. Another woman, later identified as Karina Baldwin, an aqua Zumba instructor, called 911 and then assisted in CPR, according to Cousins.

Upon firefighters arrival, Cousins says the 4-year-old was alert and conscious and later transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, by CareFlite ground ambulance.

Leann, who is a Heartland resident, will be considered for a Life Saving Award at the department’s upcoming meeting.
