KAUFMAN, Texas — One person was injured and four others were displaced in a residential structure fire in Kaufman on Wednesday night.
The Kaufman Fire Department was first dispatched to the fire at approximately 7:45 p.m., for a burn victim in the 700 block of East 1st North, unaware of an ongoing structure fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief Ronnie Davis.
Upon Davis’ arrival, the 911 caller stated the burn victim had already been transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman, Texas, in a private vehicle.
Davis noticed smoke coming from a side window of the old seed gin which had been converted to a residential structure and began attacking the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher while additional units were en route.
When firefighters arrived with an engine, several firefighters attacked the fire with a hose from the interior of the home and were able to contain the fire to a single bedroom.
Davis says two other adults and two children were able to safely evacuate the home but would likely be displaced overnight. The American Red Cross of Kaufman County is assisting the displaced individuals.
Three Kaufman Fire Department fire apparatus responded to the scene and the Scurry Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire station for a fill-in while firefighters were on scene.
At the time of this report, the extent of the burn victim’s injuries were unknown.
