KAUFMAN, Texas — UPDATE — One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on State Highway (SH) 243 earlier today.
At approximately 2:05 p.m., troopers were dispatched to the wreck on SH 243 approximately two miles east of Kaufman.
There, troopers say preliminary crash investigation indicates an 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on SH 243 when it struck an unknown object and became disabled in the roadway.
"As the truck slowed to a stop, a Dodge pickup failed to control its speed and swerved into the westbound lane striking another truck-tractor semi-truck head on," stated DPS Staff Sergeant Kyle Bradford.
The impact caused the 18-wheeler to overturn and strike a small passenger vehicle.
The driver of the Dodge, who has not been identified, was airlifted to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the second 18-wheeler was transported to a Kaufman hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the small passenger vehicle was uninjured.
SH 243 has since reopened.
