ATHENS, Texas — Athens Independent School District officials confirm one student has been killed and another injured after a school bus and train collided on Friday afternoon.

"It is with great sorrow that we confirm one of our precious middle school students lost his life today when a district school bus collided with a train in Athens," read a statement from the district.
A female student who attended Central Athens Elementary School was also on the bus and airlifted to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
No other students were on the bus and the driver was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
"We ask that you join with us in humbly praying for their families," stated the district.
All Athens ISD after-school events have been cancelled, according to the district.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m., according to a Union Pacific spokesperson.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash. No additional information was available at the time of press. A press conference is expected to take place at 7 p.m.
