TERRELL, Texas — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in Terrell on Tuesday afternoon.
Police are now working to identify the pedestrian who is described as a male who appeared to be white or light-skinned, possibly Hispanic, with dark hair and a large beard. He was wearing blue jean shorts, a black t-shirt, white tennis shoes and white socks.
Around 4:56 p.m., the Terrell Police Department was dispatched to the railroad tracks near Gardner Street where Union Pacific personnel reported the pedestrian was struck.
Witnesses, along with the locomotive's conductor, told police the train was traveling westbound as it slowed to approximately 10 miles per hour for an approaching stop ahead when they noticed the man walking east towards the train, according to Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom.
"The male subject then stopped and stood near the train as it passed," stated Sansom. "Due to the height of the train, they were unable to see the male when they got closer."
The man was determined to have been struck and found deceased. He was not carrying any forms of identification. He was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Mike Smith at 6:10 p.m. and later transported to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office.
"The cause of the incident is still under investigation," stated Sansom.
