Girl Scouts Troop 9276 of Forney is hosting a Pet Awareness Day on January 19, and the girls spoke in front of the Forney City Council at City Hall on January 8 to explain what they have planned and why.

Six members of Troop 9276 gave a presentation to the Council and the audience, each taking turns speaking to the crowd. They explained that on January 19, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Walgreens on FM 548 in Forney, they will be having a “Pet Party” event. This event will include a low cost vet clinic and will have members of the Forney Animal Control and certified animal trainers on hand. They also plan to have face painters for the kids.

The group of fourth and fifth graders explained that they are trying to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, which according to the Girl Scouts website “is the highest award that a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.” The Pet Party will be phase one of their planned community project, and they hope it will raise awareness for the Forney Animal Shelter.

Phase two of their project is to help the Forney Animal Shelter get even bigger and better. That coincides well with the City's plan to build a new animal shelter. The City Council voted in February 2012 to accept the bid of Ron Hobbs Architects to design the building and landscape for the new shelter. According to Mayor Darren Rozell, the Council is likely to review some options from the firm in a couple of months. The new shelter will be located off HWY 80 at Reeder Road.

Phase three of the Girl Scouts project is to help get a pet park open in Forney, which would make many dog owners in the community very happy. Mayor Rozell addressed the youngsters at the meeting and told them, “We appreciate your help and your efforts.”
