Railroad quiet zone nearing final implementation in Forney

FORNEY, Texas — The railroad quiet zone in Forney, which is more than a decade in the making, is nearing its final implementation, according to City Manager James Fisher.

The City of Forney was awaiting a notice of establishment from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) before a required final 21-day wait period commenced.

“We’ve received a letter from the Federal Railroad Administration that we are within the 21-day period,” stated Fisher during the Forney City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

“So, hopefully, by Christmas on Main Street we will be within a complete quiet zone,” he said.

The establishment of the quiet zone —an area in which trains cannot sound their warning horn unless of an emergency— has been in the works for nearly a decade and will be established between South Bois D’ Arc Street and Farm-to-Market (FM) 548.

"I’ll tell you from past experience, the first 30-60 days you kind of have trains off and on honking their horn," said Fisher.
