KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Several residents self-evacuated as a quick-moving, heavy-brush fire threatened their homes on Sundown Drive in eastern Kaufman County.
A resident first reported the fire at 4:05 p.m. as the fire moved through thick brush behind a row of homes on Sundance Drive — approximately 6 miles east of Kaufman, Texas. Initial responding units were tasked with cutting off the head of the fire which was quickly approaching a row of homes.
The College Mound Volunteer Fire Department and Scurry Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched as mutual aid at the scene of the fire. The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched as station stand-by in Kaufman.
An abandoned mobile home was consumed by the fire and completely destroyed. Approximately 15.7 acres of heavy brush and grass were consumed by the fire, Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards.
Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to three nearby houses, according to Richards. Due to the heavy-brush environment, firefighters had to walk a majority of the fire and also utilized backpack blowers for mop-up.
No injuries were reported in the fire. At approximately 5:30 p.m., Richards reported the fire was about 90 percent contained.
The Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin of the fire.
Kaufman County is currently under a burn ban and the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, Texas, issued a warning for potentially hazardous fire conditions in north Texas on Tuesday.
This is a developing story.
