FORNEY, Texas — The South Chestnut Street railroad crossing reopened earlier today after weeks of construction to upgrade the crossing to railroad quiet zone standards.

The South Chestnut Street crossing was the final crossing needing upgrades in the ongoing quiet zone project which will extend from South Bois D’ Arc Street and Farm-to-Market (FM) 548.

After nearly a decade of city officials discussing the quiet zone — an area in which trains cannot sound their warning horn unless of an emergency — crews broke ground on the project in November 2015.

Each intersection in the proposed quiet zone needed to be constructed to quiet zone standards as set by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and below a Nationwide Significant Risk Threshold.

With the completion of the safety upgrades, the project will go under review by the FRA and the Union Pacific Railroad.

The implementation of the quiet zone is expected to take effect in July 2016, according to City of Forney Public Works Director Chris Metz.
