FORNEY, Texas — A Henderson Elementary School student was approached by a suspicious vehicle last week, according to a letter from Henderson Elementary Principal Laurie Branch addressed to parents.

The letter was dated September 2, 2016, and references an incident which occurred on September 1, 2016, with a student in the Winner’s Circle neighborhood.

“One of our students exited a Forney ISD bus to walk home in Winner’s Circle neighborhood and was approached by a black pickup truck,” stated Branch in the letter. “A man inside the truck ask the child if the student would like a ride home and insisted the child get inside the truck.”

“The child quickly ran home from the scene and is safe,” state Branch.

The incident was reported to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.

Branch says district officials and school resource officers are working to monitor the area and provide close supervision of the neighborhoods.

School counselor Mrs. Carranza, in the letter, provided the following safety tips for students:

  • If you are playing outside and are approached by a stranger in a car, do not go towards the car.
  • Always find the closest adult that you know to seek help.
  • If playing in the front of your house or an unfenced area, be sure to play with a friend.
  • When walking home, try to walk in paris or small groups.
  • If approached by a car, do not talk to them and walk/run swiftly to your home.
  • Trust your “tummy feeling” (gut) in all situations. If you are uncomfortable, get out of the situation and seek help.

“We encourage all of you to talk with your children about these neighborhood safety reminders,” stated Branch.
