TERRELL, Texas — In a continued effort to combat the Nationwide Opioid Crisis and drug addiction in Terrell and Kaufman County, the Terrell Police Department and local residents participated in the fifteenth semi-annual Drug Take-Back Day on April 28th.
This initiative, which took place nationwide on Saturday, April 28, 2018, encourages people to turn in unused prescription and over-the-counter medicines. This DEA sponsored drug take-back day gives Americans the opportunity to turn in unwanted and unused prescription and non-prescription drugs for proper disposal, rather than doing so by potentially hazardous means like flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away in the trash.
Terrell was one of three locations in Kaufman County participating in this semiannual event. "We collected 302 pounds of unused medicines this past Saturday, and turned them in to the DEA for disposal", said Sgt. Mark Pritchard of the Terrell Police Department. "We have participated in this event since it was started in 2010."
The next event is tentatively set for the 4th weekend in October.
During last fall's event, held on October 2017, there were:
Total Law Enforcement Participation: 4,274
Total Collection Sites: 5,321
Terrell participated and collected 138 lbs during the 2017-2018 fiscal year
Terrell collected 302 pounds during this month's event alone
Total Weight Collected: (2017) 912,305 lbs. (456 Tons)
