FORNEY—As Texas WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) celebrates 50 years of service, the Nutrition Education and Clinic Services Director for Texas WIC says the program is here to help during the holiday season.

“During the holidays, children and families are home more, and it can be a challenge to have nutritious and healthy meals and snacks at the table,” said Amanda Hovis, nutrition education and clinic services director for Texas WIC.

“Texas WIC assists families with nutritious food so families can focus on purchasing the other items that they need.”

According to a press release, since the first clinic opened in 1974 in Montgomery County, more than 21 million individuals have received support statewide. Today, the program helps 800,000 people each month.

Texas WIC recipients receive fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, cheese, and other healthy foods. WIC also offers free breastfeeding and nutrition classes and one-on-one counseling.

When a woman finds out she is pregnant, she can apply for WIC. WIC is also available to anyone with children under 5 years old, including dads, foster parents, guardians, or grandparents.

Recently, WIC updated its income guidelines to allow more people to be eligible for services.
