The Hole Thing Donuts recently held a Facebook contest called the “Great Donut Design” to give their customers a chance to create the donut of their dreams. They gave inForney.com the exclusive honor of announcing the winner of this fun contest.
What THT owners Katie and Stephanie Vrana thought would be a small contest, turned out to be anything but. Over 125 design submissions were received, leaving THT's owners and staff with the task of whittling the list down to the top 24. Those 24 submissions were impressive, with donut ideas that included a peanut butter cup donut, a chocolate-sea-salt-caramel donut, and even a rocky road fritter. In the last week of July, four of the contest donuts were featured on the menu each day, giving customers a chance to taste the delicious treats.
The poll voting on Facebook ended at 5 p.m. on August 3, 2012. The winner of the contest will receive a $50 gift card to The Hole Thing Donuts, a THT t-shirt, a trophy, and their donut will become a featured donut on part of THT's permanent menu. The second place vote getter will receive a $25 gift card and the third place winner receives a $15 gift card. Katie Vrana says the contest has been “a blast, but very challenging.” She noted one terrific story of a family that came up with multiple donut ideas that landed three of them in the final 24. Mr. Bailey told her that his entire family turned off the TV and electronics for the evening and spent their time together dreaming up donut ideas! Vrana said, “They used the donut contest as family bonding time, I thought that was pretty cool.”
And the winner is...
The 1st place winner of the contest is Kim Lagenour White. She created a dark chocolate mousse filled donut with a cream cheese frosting, fresh raspberries, and a dark chocolate drizzle. She received 23 percent of the vote for her delicious creation!
The 2nd place winner was young Jaitlyn Key who drew 13 percent of the votes for her Hershey Strawberry donut made with fresh strawberries and Hershey's kisses.
The 3rd place winner was actually a tie with each donut getting eight percent of the votes. The Margarita Donut was a lemon glazed donut filled with lime and brushed with Triple Sec, and rimmed with salt. The Margarita Donut was dreamed up by Cappie McBeth. The Hole Monte is a donut filled with ham, turkey, and swiss cheese, rolled in powdered sugar and then served with raspberry jam. The Hole Monte was the brain-child of Darci Marie Branche.
Katie Vrana said, “We were blown away by the number of entries. We want to thank everyone who entered, they rock our world!! Congratulations to Kim White for coming up with the winning donut design. Her donut will be featured all next week.” She also mentioned that the 2nd and 3rd place winners will have their donuts on the menu at some point next week. She added, “You know, when we first opened, some people were taken aback by the fancy donuts and they just wanted the plain ones. Now, if we are out of the fancy ones, people are really disappointed...we changed the way that Forney thinks about donuts!”
