DALLAS, Texas — Three construction workers were struck by a pickup truck on Interstate 20 in Kaufman County and airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital on Tuesday morning.

In total, five people were injured.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:27 a.m. on westbound Interstate 20 near mile marker 514 and the Kaufman-Van Zandt County line.

Preliminary investigation indicates a white Chevrolet Sierra pickup truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 when, for an as yet undetermined reason, the vehicle traveled onto the left shoulder of the roadway, Texas Department of Public Safety Staff Sergeant Kyle Bradford told inForney.com.

“The Chevrolet pickup struck two construction workers outside their vehicle, then hit one of the construction pickups which in turn hit the construction pickup in front of it,” he said. “Three construction workers, two that were hit outside the vehicle and one that was sitting in the pickup, were taken by air ambulance to Baylor Medical Center of Dallas.”

The driver and the passenger of the pickup truck were also transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, by ground ambulance. The passenger sustained potentially life-threatening injuries.

The current condition on the other individuals is unknown. Bradford says they were all transported in serious condition.

The construction workers were employees of Massana Construction of Frisco, Texas, a Texas Department of Transportation contractor, which was awarded a contract to install a cable barrier in the highway’s median from the Van Zandt County line to Rosehill Road in Terrell.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
