TERRELL, Texas  — Two dogs will be held in a 90-day quarantine in accordance with state law after killing a rabid skunk in Terrell earlier this week.

TERRELL, Texas  — Two dogs will be held in a 90-day quarantine in accordance with state law after killing a rabid skunk in Terrell earlier this week.

Terrell Animal Control officers responded to a call about a dead skunk earlier this week in the Kings Creek area. There, officers confirmed the deceased skunk was killed by two dogs.

"Exercising due diligence, our staff had the carcass securely shipped for testing and results came back positive for rabies," stated a press release from the Terrell Police Department.

In accordance with state law, both dogs will be held for a 90-day quarantine while they are vaccinated for rabies, according to the department.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity as observed in animals both domestic and wild and avoid any contact with unknown, unfamiliar, or wild animals when at all possible, the department advised.

The skunk is in the top five most likely of North American mammals as potential carriers for rabies, read the release.
