FORNEY, Texas — District 4 State Representative Keith Bell led a moment of silence yesterday on the House Floor in recognition of a fatal Athens ISD bus crash last week that claimed the life of a student.
On Friday, January 25, 2019, an Athens ISD and a Union Pacific train collided — killing 13-year-old Christopher Bonilla, an Athens Middle School student.
The crash also critically injured 9-year-old Joselyn Torres, an Athens Central Elementary School student, and injured the bus driver, 78-year-old John Stevens of Mabank, Texas. Torres was airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital and was last listed in stable condition. Stevens has since been released from the hospital.
"As we observe this moment of silence, I ask for your thoughts and prayers for everyone who has been devastated by this tragedy. In the days to come, let us not forget the families, Athens ISD, and the community as we ask for God's healing and comforting hand to rest upon them during these difficult days," stated Bell, a former long-time Forney ISD Board member and president.
The funeral for Torres has been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday at the Athens High School gymnasium. There will be no school at any Athens ISD campus that day, according to the district. All athletic events previously scheduled to be held at Athens High School on Friday have also been rescheduled.
