FORNEY, Texas — For the past 29 years the Forney Police Department was led by Chief Rick Barnes before he announced his retirement late last year — a role recently-selected Chief Robert Sherwin says he is honored to fulfill.
Sherwin, a 30-year-veteran of the Dallas Police Department, was selected among 95 applicants, according to Forney City Manager James Fisher.
“It’s difficult when you go through this to find the absolute best man that you can,” Fisher stated during Sherwin’s swearing-in and badge-pinning ceremony on Monday afternoon. “I was very fortunate that Chief Sherwin threw his name in the hat.”
Sherwin was sworn into office by Municipal Court Judge Margaret Spain before a badge pinning ceremony was conducted.
I’m cognizant of the fact that Forney has not had a new chief for 29 years,” said Sherwin. “I’m honored, honored by that.”
“It’s an honor and I’m anxious to start working with the City of Forney and the Forney Police Department,” stated Sherwin. “We’re a great department and but were going to get even better.”
“These are great people here and you guys are great people to work with and I’m excited,” he said. “It’s going to be an adventure for all of us and we’re going to work hard, we’re going to partner with all law enforcement, and were going to work to make this great and make the citizens of Forney safe.”
“The City of Forney is very fortunate to recruit a man of his caliber and character to lead the Forney Police Department,” Fisher said last month in announcing Sherwin’s selection.
“He will bring a wealth of energy, resources and servant leadership to not only the Forney Police Department, but the City organization and community,” stated Fisher. “The professionalism and integrity of Chief Sherwin will enable the Forney Police Department to continue to build on the solid legacy of a strong family and community-focused policing established by Chief Rick Barnes, who retired in October after almost 39 years of service.”
