TERRELL, Texas — Two people were displaced after a fire destroyed their Terrell-area home on Wednesday night and a smoke detector is being credited for warning them of the impending fire.

TERRELL, Texas — Two people were displaced after a fire destroyed their Terrell-area home on Wednesday night and a smoke detector is being credited for warning them of the impending fire.

Just before 10:30 p.m., the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the home on Longspur Lane, north of Terrell, Texas. Upon arrival, firefighters reported the home completely engulfed in flames.

Mutual aid was immediately requested from the Forney Fire Department, the Elmo Volunteer Fire Department, the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department, and the McLendon-Chisholm Volunteer Fire Department.

A family member said her mother and father live in the home. The father was in the shower and heard the smoke detectors going off, alerting him to the fire. Before exiting the home, the homeowner reported possibly seeing an extension cord on fire.

No injuries were reported for the homeowners but the family’s two dogs were unaccounted for after the fire.

As of 11:45 p.m., firefighters remain on scene tackling hot spots.

The Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire and the Kaufman County American Red Cross is on scene assisting the family.
