FORNEY, Texas — Armani Watts has shown improvements, both physically and mentally, coming into the 2015-16 football season, according to his football coaches at Texas A&M.
Watts, a North Forney High School graduate, started last year as a true freshman for the Aggies and led the team in interceptions — three of the teams’ five— and pass breakups.
“[Watts] is probably playing as good as he’s played,” Texas A&M Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin said. “If can be more consistent than he was last year can be an all-league player for us.”
“He's played enough big games for us and he understands his weaknesses. I think he's really worked hard in the offseason,” stated Sumlin.
Watts had seven starts as a true freshman at free safety last season. Watts also contributed 59 tackles — 38 of which were solo— and two tackles for loss, a season-high seven tackles against Mississippi State, and five or more tackles in seven games. Watts has tacked on 10 pounds, now at 200, since his season opener weigh-in last season, according to the Aggies’ roster.
“Armani is a guy who played as a true freshman and got off with some fireworks against South Carolina,” stated Coach Terry Joseph. “He had some peaks and valleys last year as a true freshman.”
“I think he’s really matured in the offseason,” stated Joseph. “His body has changed, a credit to Coach Jackson in the weight room.”
“I think he’s playing faster, he's a lot more comfortable,” said Joseph. “We like for him to play aggressive which he's been doing the whole camp.”
The Aggies begin their season at Houston’s NRG Stadium against Arizona State on September 5, 2015, at 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN.
