DALLAS, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of quarterback Caleb Hanie of Forney, Texas earlier today – due to their first rounds of cuts to reduce their roster to 75 players before their preseason finale against the Denver Broncos on Thursday.
The final cuts are due by 3 p.m. Saturday which will reduce each team's roster to 53 players for the regular season. Hanie had signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys on April 23, 2014.
In 2002, Hanie led the Forney High School Jackrabbits to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals where they were defeated by the eventual state champions Everman, 21-14. In 2003, Hanie again led the team deep into the playoffs – this time dropping out with a loss against Gainesville in the quarterfinals, 24-21.
Hanie began his career in the NFL in 2008 after signing on with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free-agent out of Colorado State. Hanie eventually made his way into the backup quarterback position for Jay Cutler.
Hanie also appeared on rosters for the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens. Hanie completed his college career at Colorado State University fifth in Mountain West history with 39 touchdown passes and seventh with 6,523 total yards.
2012 fourth-round pick safety Matt Johnson was waived/injured along with tight end Jordan Najvar, linebacker DeVonte Holloman – who is said to be out with a career-ending neck injury –, and defensive backs Justin Green and Johnny Thomas.
Among those released were Adewale Ojomo, Tom Hornsey, Chris Boyd, Wayne Tribue, and Casey Kreiter. Amobi Okoye and Ben Gardner were moved from the active roster to the injury list.
