FORNEY, Texas — The Mesquite Poteet Pirates (2-2, 1-0) sealed an early victory over the Forney High School Jackrabbits (2-2, 0-1) at City Bank Stadium on Friday night, September 16, 2016, in their District 15-5A opener.
The Pirates scored 34 uncontested points in the first half of the game — enough to seal an early victory over Forney despite two Jackrabbit touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Poteet’s Kid Dickerson started the scoring for the Pirates after stripping the ball from Forney’s Devon Rideaux and returning for a touchdown with just over a minute of play. Continuing the scoring in the first quarter, Poteet’s Daiquan Jackson scored on a 7-yard scamper with 8:21 on the clock, quarterback Kaleb Fletcher connected with ChaCha Corbin on a 6-yard touchdown pass, and an additional two points were added on a safety.
Dickerson continued the scoring in the second quarter on a 1-yard run with 5:19 remaining in the second quarter. Angel Sevier completed a 30-yard field goal at the end of the half — completing the scoring for Poteet and securing a win.
Forney’s Brendon Mims returned a fumble for a touchdown with 7:40 in the fourth quarter and Devon Rideaux snuck in an 8-yard run for another Jackrabbit touchdown in the last minute of the game.
Poteet accumulated 298 yards to Forney’s 216. Forney forced 3 turnovers with Poteet forcing 4 of their own.
Forney’s Devon Rideaux threw for 65 yards and rushed for another 63 yards and a touchdown.Jaylon Hutchings rushed for 112 yards on 18 carries and Peyton Johnson, Sean Stephens, and Zayne Mahan caught passes for 22, 19, and 16 yards, respectively.
Forney will next face District 15-5A foe Royse City High School (2-2, 0-1) in Royse City on Friday, September 23, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.
