FORNEY, Texas — The Forney High School girls soccer team (6-4-1, 2-0) opened district play with two shutout wins over Terrell High School and South Garland High School this week.
The team opened district with a 3-0 shutout of Terrell on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, and a high-scoring 8-0 shutout win over South Garland at home on Friday night, January 30, 2015.
“We feel really good right now opening district 2-0,” Soccer Head Coach Trisha Williamson told inForney.com. “We have a healthy squad, and what makes us dangerous is we have several players contributing offensively.”
In route to their victory over South Garland, Forney’s Caylon McMillan and Kaleigh Phillips achieved hat tricks — scoring three goals each. The team scored four goals in the first half only to match it again with another four in the second half.
McMillan struck first with 35:58 left in the first. A minute later, Phillips landed the Jackrabbits second goal. Phillips went on to score another about five minutes later with McMillan ending the half with another of her own.
Phillips tipped in her third goal of the night with 26 minutes left on the clock in the second half. Kaley Whitworth scored near the 22 minute mark, McMillan achieved her hat trick with 15 minutes remaining, and Gabbie Gleaves sealed the Jackrabbits scoring drive with 8 minutes remaining in the lopsided game.
On Tuesday, for the team’s district opener, Phillips, McMillan, and Whitworth each scored a goal against Terrell.
“Right now, we are just taking it one game at a time,” said Williamson. “We still recognize that we have work to do. Our goal each game is to play better than the last.”
“So far it has been working,” she said.
The team made school history last season by making it to the UIL Class 4A Region II regional quarterfinals — the furthest a Forney Independent School District soccer team has gone in postseason since the program’s inception in 2003. The boys team also made it to the regional quarterfinal round last year.
