FORNEY, Texas — The Forney High School girls soccer team has clinched a playoff birth for the ninth year in a row, according to Head Coach Trisha Williamson.
Williamson has led the team to the playoffs eight of those nine years.
The team clinched their berth with a win over Mesquite Poteet on Tuesday night on the heels of a victory over cross-town rival North Forney High School on Friday night, according to Williamson.
The team (14-4-1, 9-2) is led by senior goalkeeper Kenna Williams and defender Savannah Miller.
“The pair are defensive minded, allowing the least amount of goals in district with only three games left of district play,” stated Williamson.
Williams helped secure wins in all four of their penalty shootouts this year.
The Jackrabbit defense also includes sophomore Chardonnay Harvey who Williamson says uses her speed and technical ability to play alongside junior defender Kelsey Phillips which secure a solid backline that rarely gets beat.
Senior striker Gabbie Gleaves has led the team in goals followed by sophomore Hailey McClung, who also leads the team in offensive assists, and junior Kelsey Phillips. These players were assisted by senior target forward Caitlynne Smith who “has an eye for reading the game” assisting with her “deadly set pieces and unstoppable PK shot,” stated Williamson.
At midfield, junior Lorraine Cannavan was able to “ignite the offense by distributing the ball as attacking mid,” stated Williamson. Junior Macie McVay, formally a goalkeeper, is assisting as a field player at multiple positions.
“Senior Rebecca Huffman was recently released from a concussion and notably scored in her first game back,” stated Williamson. “Sophomore Kylee Brees and Lizzy Work add in offensively to create scoring opportunities.”
Williamson says the team is rooted in a strong freshman class with seven freshman on the lineup and four that regularly start.
“Statistically you cant define the importance of these freshman, but they are certainly the glue that holds the team together,” stated Williamson.
Freshman Cassidy Hill fills the role defense and midfield in the starting line-up in addition to Desiree Rodriguez, who is the team’s second leader in assists, and Hannah Yuditzky.
Freshman Karaline Wiley has four goals this season including an equalizer in their matchup against Poteet High School. “The roster also includes Anna Enochs, Emma Moore, and Callie Minter that show up at key points and give quality minutes from the bench,” stated Williamson.
“The team motto is ‘Stronger Together,’ stated Williamson. “They most certainly are.”
