FORNEY, Texas — A Forney High School sophomore has been selected to play on the 2015 USA 15U National Team and will compete in the 2015 COPABE "AA" Pan Am Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico from August 21-30.
Jonathan Childress, a 6 foot, 4 inch, 200-pound sophomore who last year pitched as a freshman for Forney High School varsity baseball and was named the Underclassman of the Year in District 12-5A last year, was only one-of-two baseball players selected in Texas to compete on the 20-man roster for the 15U National Team.
Prior to his selection for the National Team, Childress traveled with Team Mizuno to play in the 15U National Team Eastern Championships in Jupiter, Florida, according to his father, Don Childress. “From there, he was selected for the 40-man trials roster.”
Childress competed in the trials at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, before being selected to the 20-man 2015 15U National Team.
“We are very proud of him,” said Don Childress. “Making this team has been a goal of his for the past year and he has been very determined to make it happen.”
“He has been fortunate enough to have good coaches and teammates along the way that have helped him develop into the player he is,” he said.
“The team will begin workouts on Saturday in a combined practice with the USA Baseball 14U National Team Development Program at the National Training Complex,” according to the team’s website. “The 15U National Team will then play three exhibition games in Cary before departing for Houston, Texas, and ultimately Aguascalientes, Mexico.”
