Fans from all over Forney packed the stands at Forney High School gymnasium to watch the North Forney Falcons and the Forney Jackrabbits' volleyball teams battle for the first time in district play in Class 4A. The city rivalry officially began with this game on Friday night, September 21, 2012.
The energy in the gymnasium was deafening as students and parents from both schools were cheering at every turn in the game. The two teams played a best-of-5 game series to determine the winner of the match. The Forney Jackrabbits took a quick lead in Game 1 and held it through the end to win, Forney 25 to North Forney 16.
After coming off a strong win, the Jackrabbits came out again with a quick lead and won with a wider margin in Game 2, Forney 25 to North Forney 13. The Lady Falcons were determined not to let the Lady Jackrabbits shut them out and after a pep talk from Coach Kramer the Lady Falcons put up an impressive fight in Game 3.
Game 3 started with Forney taking advantage of their momentum and solidified another quick lead. The Lady Falcons dug deep to fight back towards the end of the game and closed the point gap. The game was now tied at 23-23. Now the only thing that determined a match winner and a Game 4 was two points. The Lady Falcons sealed the deal and won Game 3, North Forney 25 to Forney 23.
The Lady Jackrabbits took the lead going into Game 4 but were soon overtaken by the Lady Falcons who took the lead and kept it. The Lady Falcons won Game 4, North Forney 25 to Forney 20.
Game 5 was now anyone's game with the score tied 2 to 2. The winner of Game 5 would only need to score fifteen points and lead by two points. The first point was scored by North Forney and the blue-colored fans erupted. The Lady Falcons held the lead for the first six points of the game but the Lady Jackrabbits tied the score and took the lead. The Forney Lady Jackrabbits won the fifth game, 15 to 9, and the overall match, 3 to 2.
Forney Jackrabbit's Head Coach Thornton said this about the girls win, βThe girls fought hard, played hard, worked hard, and I'm very proud of the kids for persevering to the end.β
The Falcons and Jackrabbits volleyball teams will face each other one more time this district season on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at North Forney High School. North Forney Falcon's Head Coach Kramer said, βI look forward to the second round of district when we face off again. The Lady Falcons laid their heart on the line to fight back into the game.
