Gonzo Report: Forney dominates Dallas Samuell, 53-18

FORNEY, Texas — After two weeks, the 2015 campaign continues to mirror that of 2014 for the Forney Jackrabbits.

FORNEY, Texas — After two weeks, the 2015 campaign continues to mirror that of 2014 for the Forney Jackrabbits.

Two great offensive performances in a row, along with two very solid defensive efforts, have propelled the Jackrabbits (2-0) to another 2-0 start. Tonight’s win, a 53-18 decision over Dallas Samuell (1-1), was a carbon copy of last year’s Week 2 big win (41-0).

When you consider 6 of the points the Samuell Trojans scored were off a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, the 12 points given up by the Forney defense looks even better.

An opening drive by Samuell, assisted by a long break-away run up the middle, resulted in a 7-6 score early in the 1st quarter. Samuel would never get that close again, as the Jackrabbit defense kicked it into high gear and kept the Samuell offense out of the end zone until late in the 4th quarter — after the game was essentially decided.

Several defensive players earned mention, led by Brendan Vaughn who scored a defensive touchdown off a fumble return. This was the second straight game the Forney defense featured a fumble return for a touchdown. Brandon Ruiz and Kyle Stephens had a second strong showing from the safety positions. Linebacker Cory Sandlin was much more active tonight and made plays all over the field. Senior defensive back Jarod Gonzalez had another strong game, highlighted by an interception in the 3rd quarter.

Senior quarterback Luke Skipper also had an impressive game as the Jackrabbits piled up over 400 yards of offense on the night. Skipper had to have enjoyed the debut of transfer running back Michael Prox, who was the star player of the night for the Jackrabbits. Prox showed speed and a hard running style that has been missing since the graduation of Forney’s Peter Smith several years ago. Prox showed he can get to the edge with his speed, he can run up the middle with excellent vision, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield. It is a luxury to have a back with all those tools and the Forney offense featured Prox to great effect tonight.

Senior wide receiver Cody Cook had another very good game, as he scored early on a long throw from Skipper and once again broke several tackles before reaching the end zone. Cook isn’t the fastest or biggest wide receiver on the team, but don’t tell him that. He plays like he is and the results can’t be argued with.

Skipper completed 12 of 18 passes for 22 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Skipper also rushed for 80 yards on 13 carries. Prox rushed for 60 yards on 8 carries, caught three passes for 107 yards, and scored a rushing and reception touchdown.

Other notable highlights include Aaron Rideaux with 66 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown and Cody Cook with 75 yards on 3 receptions and two touchdowns.
