Gonzo Report: Forney routs Wills Point for season-opening win

FORNEY, Texas — Much like the first game of 2014, the Forney High School Jackrabbits started the season with an impressive offensive showing — downing the Wills Point Tigers, 56-21.

Unlike 2014, however, Wills Point didn’t make an impressive comeback in the second half to make things interesting. This season-opening win was never in doubt for the Jackrabbits, as they racked up over 400 yards of offense.

There were several stars for the Jackrabbit offense, led by senior quarterback Luke Skipper, senior wideout Malik Woods and newcomers Aaron and Devon Riddeaux. Skipper threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. On the night, Skipper completed 15 of 17 for 318 yards through the air, adding another 67 yards on the ground.

Woods was the recipient of two of the passing touchdowns from Skipper, with the Riddeaux twins, who are sophomores, catching the other two. Skipper’s rushing touchdown came on a 4-yard keeper around the left side.

The offensive and scoring story isn’t complete without a mention of sophomore Jaylon Hutchings who scored twice. The first score was a short, but powerful, run up the middle. His second score was an 97-yard scoop-and-score while playing nosetackle. Hutchings had an impressive first varsity game defensively, punctuating the performance with those two touchdowns.

The Jackrabbit defense, featuring many new starters, accounted well for themselves in the season opener. After a strong Wills Point drive to start the game, the Jackrabbits created the first turnover of the game and stopped the Wills Point drive near the 20 yard line on a fumble recovery.

The rest of the first half didn’t see Wills Point threaten to score again, until 8 seconds left before halftime. While Wills Point RB Marques Couch gained a total of 247 rushing yards, there was no other offensive player the Jackrabbits couldn’t contain.

The Jackrabbits will look to repeat last year’s five game winning streak by taking step No.2 against Dallas Samuel at City Bank Stadium in Forney on Friday, September 4, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.

Jackrabbit games will be broadcast live at www.sportsgram.net. Join Nate White, Gonzo, and Brett Bailey as they bring you all the Jackrabbit action this year — for the 10th year running.
