Forney opened up District 10-4A play against the visiting Highland Park Scots at City Bank stadium on Thursday night, September 26, 2013.
The Jackrabbits took the opening possession 68 yards and scored on a 35-yard completion by Jake Guercia to Collin Rucker. Rhett Coleman made it a surprising 7-0 Jackrabbit lead with 7:12 left to go in the first quarter.
The Scots answered with an opening salvo of their own when they capped off a 55-yard drive Brooks Burgin’s 1 yard touchdown run.
After a couple of drives stalled for each team, Forney went back into the lead on a 46-yard drive polished off by running back AJ Atnip’s 3 yard run. Rhett Coleman continued his consistent kicking in 2013 with his second successful PAT of the night. Forney was up 14-7 at the 5:40 mark in the 2nd quarter.
Forney missed a golden opportunity in the first half to extend the lead after the Forney Defense intercepted a Brooks Burgin pass deep in Scot territory. The threat only lasted one play as the Jackrabbit offense returned the favor and turned the ball back over. Much like the fumbled punt two weeks ago against Corsicana, this is where the wheels started to come off for the Jackrabbits.
Highland Park was able to muster a Will Sanders 22-yard field goal before the end of the half, sending both teams to the break with a 14-10 Jackrabbit lead.
Highland Park returned the opening drive favor to Forney by scoring on the first possession of the second half. This drive was actually the start of 6 straight possessions resulting in a TD for Highland Park. Rhett Coleman of Forney continued his scoring with a field goal of 21 yards to give the Jackrabbits their only points of the second half.
In the end, the boxscore shows 21 points for the Scots in the third and fourth quarters. 42 points scored in a game is usually enough to get a win, but when all comes in one half you are almost assured of a victory. The final score was 52-17. The Scots are now 1-0 in District play as the Jackrabbits take their 0-1 record to Mesquite Memorial next Friday for a showdown against the very powerful Mesquite Poteet Pirate team.
Game Notes: Forney had 12 penalties for 89 yards. Forney lost the turnover battle 3-1 on the night (2 INT’s and 1 Fumble for Forney.) Highland Park completed 65% of their passes. Highland Park controlled the ball with 21 first downs.
