KAUFMAN, Texas — For the first time since 1959, the Kaufman High School (3-0) football team defeated long-time rival Terrell High School (2-1) with a 28-12 victory on Friday night, September 11, 2015.

Kaufman scored mid-way through the 1st quarter and set the pace for what would be a hard-fought game with both teams amassing over 230 total yards.

A leading factor in the Lions’ victory was their shutdown of Terrell’s heavy-hitting running back Dawonya Tucker — limiting him to only 28 yards on 14 carries. It wasn’t until the 4th quarter that the Tigers started connecting with Tucker in the air on three plays for 25, but the game had already been determined.

Leading the Lions’ offense was Dru Prox with 142 total yards, of the Lions 252, and two touchdowns. The Lions chose a majority ground game approach with 190 yards rushing and 62 yards passing as compared to the Tigers’ 103 and 131, respectively.

Leading the Tigers’ offense was Devin Cobern with 58-rushing yards on 4 carries and 71-yards on two receptions. Cobern scored the Tigers’ only two touchdowns, impressively — once with a 61-yard run in the 3rd quarter and a 65-yard pass late in the 4th quarter.

Also scoring for the Lions was Jefferson Fritz who had a 55-yard interception for a return early in the 3rd quarter. Cobern would contest that touchdown just ten seconds later with his 61-yard touchdown rush.

Fritz set up the Lions next touchdown early in the 4th quarter with a 42-yard pass to Ryan Gentzel. Prox completed the short, four-play drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. The score after Prox’s touchdown was Kaufman, 21, Terrell, 6.

With 1:49 remaining on the clock, Corbin sank his 65-yard reception for a touchdown. Less than a minute later, Kaufman would score after two big Prox rushes — one for 18 yards and the other a 32-yard rushing touchdown. Final score: Kaufman, 28, Terrell, 12.

Terrell will open up district play next week with their homecoming matchup against North Forney High School (1-2) — who is coming off a 62-0 win over Dallas Molina.

Kaufman will continue non-district play next week with an away game against Kennedale (3-0). Both teams will enter the game undefeated.
