COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Forney High School Lady Jackrabbits soccer team competed in the College Station Independent School District Classic this weekend in College Station, Texas.
Traveling a majority of Thursday morning, the Lady Rabbits arrived that night to play the Friendswood High School Mustangs. Forward Gabbie Gleaves kicked things off scoring the first goal of the regular season for the Lady Rabbits which was quickly followed up by a second from midfielder Kaley Whitworth. The team had 10 total shots on target for the first game off the tournament.
The team started off the second day of the tournament with a rainy and muddy 1-0 loss to College Station High School. The Lady Rabbits were unable to capitalize on several second half advances on goal.
Later Friday night, the Lady Rabbits played A&M Consolidated High School. The Lady Rabbits fell 1-0 early in their matchup but fought to the very end snatching a 1-1 tie with a Kelsey Philllips goal with six seconds remaining in their matchup.
On the final day of the tournament, Saturday, the Lady Rabbits ended with a big scoring drive against Dickinson High School. Mason Richardson and Caylon McMillan each scored a pair of goals and Whitworth and Gleaves scored two additional goals for a 6-1 victory over Dickinson High School.
The Lady Rabbits finished the tournament 2-1-1.
"This weekend was very important because it allowed us to play top caliber teams from out of our region. We opened with a win over Friendswood, a team that made it to the state semi finals last year," coach Trisha Williamson told inForney.com.
"Our girls lived up to their motto, "All In," this weekend as the girls battled in the cold, wet rain," said Williamson. "Particularly impressive was the drive from Kayleigh Phillips down the sideline in the last 10 seconds in the A&M Consolidated game. Phillips was fouled and McMillan took the free kick, crossing it to Kelsey Phillips to score in the last six seconds. That's the one thing about us, you can never count us out."
"The girls played hard, yet they realize we still have work to do," Williamson said. "We will be hosting 20 teams next week January 15 through 17 at the Lady Rabbit Invitational."
