The highly anticipated high school sports district realignment has finally happened. The North Forney High School Falcons will now be playing in the 4A division, District 10. That is putting them in the same conference as the Forney High School Jackrabbits.

Additional schools in that conference will be Carrollton Creekview, Carrollton Smith, Highland Park, Poteet, West Mesquite and Terrell High School. So the questions are out there; will North Forney be competitive now that they have moved from 3A sports? Will there now be a true rivalry between Forney HS and North Forney HS?

Ask most North Forney parents what they think and you’re likely to get the answer Regenia Vance gave, “Of course we think our Falcons will be competitive!” Jill Wallace has a son on the football team, she said, “I think most of us will just hope for the best and support them no matter what. I bet a lot of the boys will be excited about playing such established teams.” As to football, NFHS will play FHS in week 8 of the 10 week season. It’s highly likely that City Bank Stadium will be rocking the night with what hopefully turns out to be a great, but friendly rivalry.

JJ Tarno of Forney noticed immediately that the first football game between FHS and NFHS will be played at Forney High, but the North Forney Falcons are listed as the “home team.” He said, “FHS people are going to be upset about being visitors at the first FHS and NFHS game at City Bank.” As to the rivalry aspect, there are mixed feelings in Forney. Lacy Allen Janca says, "My son will be a freshman at FHS next year, and as such, I'm excited to see these boys playing against each other like they did in Peewee. In our close-knit hometown, there has always, as far as I can remember, been a North/South rivalry. It will probably be the same; just the kids will be bigger." However Misty Holler is concerned about the change, “Just going by what I’ve seen in other towns with rival high schools, it’s not likely to do well for our town’s unity…that has been the goal for as long as I can remember.”

Time will tell if the rivalry between NFHS and FHS will be friendly but competitive, or whether it becomes something ugly as in other communities. The parent’s of the athletes and school officials will have a lot to say about it. If done right, this can be a real positive for our community.
