The North Forney High School Falcons traveled to Mesquite's Memorial Stadium on Thursday night for their third District 10-4A matchup of the season against the West Mesquite High School Wranglers.
The North Forney High School Falcons traveled to Mesquite's Memorial Stadium on Thursday night for their third District 10-4A matchup of the season against the West Mesquite High School Wranglers.
The Falcons quarterback Hunter Herndon returned to the field for the matchup against the Wranglers who came into the game 2-0 in district, the Falcons 1-1. The Wrangler's passing game proved superior though with 244 passing yards and 4 touchdowns thrown by Wrangler quarterback Chason Virgil.
In the first quarter, the Wranglers scored two touchdowns. One touchdown was from a 21-yard touchdown pass from Virgil to Darrius Edwards. With 5:21 left in the first quarter, North Forney's Seth Garcia threw a pass that was intercepted and returned for a Wranlger touchdown by Dylan Edwards.
At the end of the first quarter, the Wranglers punted the ball back to the Falcons 11-yard line. Struggling for better field position, Garcia threw his second interception of the night which set up the Wranglers for their third touchdown in the second quarter, a 1-yard rush by William Stanley with 11:17 on the clock.
On the Wranglers kickoff, the Falcons retuned the ball to the West Mesquite 47-yard line. A West Mesquite 15-yard penalty set up the Falcons with a scoring drive that included a 7-yard Derrick Mosley rush, 4-yard Tritavious Jones pass, 9-yard Armani Watts run, and a 15-yard pass to Tyrone Morgan. Hunter Herndon ran it in the last yard for the touchdown. The point after kick was blocked by the Wranglers who returned the ball all the way to North Forney's endzone for 2 points, a play rarely seen. With 8:16 left in the second quarter, the score was West Mesquite 23 and North Forney 6.
The next two Wrangler touchdowns in the second quarter were thrown from the arm of Virgil. With 7:20 left in the second quarter, Virgil connected with Rodney Mosley for a 69-yard touchdown. Virgil then connected with Rodney Mosley again with 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter for a 41-yard touchdown.
Halftime score: West Mesquite 37 – North Forney 6.
The next touchdown didn't come until late in the third quarter. North Forney's Herndon connected with Armani Watts for a 26-yard touchdown pass with the point after kick completed by Hunter McClain.
The Wranglers would not contest the Falcons last touchdown until 10:25 in the fourth quarter. Virgil completed two more huge plays, a 21-yard pass to Akilian Butler and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Le'Billie Hunter.
The game came to an end with the West Mesquite Wranglers amassing 44 points to the North Forney Falcons 13.
The Falcons completed 186 total yards for the game with 14 first downs, 148 yards passing and 38 yards rushing. Armani Watts lead the team in total yards with 80 total yards and 1 touchdown. Tyron Morgan accumulated 52 total yards. Hunter Herndon completed 120 passing yards and 22 rushing yards on 15 attempts with 1 touchdown.
The Falcons next game will be a home-game matchup against Carrollton Newman Smith at City Bank Stadium on October 18, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. With tonight's loss, the Falcons are 1-2 in District 10-4A. Newman Smith is winless this season and 0-2 in district with a matchup against Terrell (0-2) tomorrow night, October 11, 2013.
