Poteet Pirates overwhelm Forney Jackrabbits

The Poteet Pirates showed why they are ranked #12 in the state in 4A football at Mesquite Memorial Stadium on Friday night. A final score of 40-3 was the result of 5 lost turnovers, too much pressure from the front seven of Poteet, too many penalties, and too many negative plays for the Jackrabbits.

Shakur Morrow started the game off on a very positive note for Forney when he intercepted a Ryan Tremain pass inside the 10 yard line to thwart the first Pirate drive of the night. After a few possession changes, Deandre McNeal opened the scoring for Poteet with a 19 yard reception at the 7:19 mark of the first quarter. We didn’t know it at the time, but that is all the scoring Poteet would need.

Poteet RB Walter Dawn, Jr. broke a one arm tackle and then busted through the Forney defense on the last play of the first quarter for a 67 yard touchdown. The next scoring play was a Pirate safety after a high snap to punter Mitch McCullouch dropped out of the back of the end zone. Another touchdown and a 25 yard field goal by Derric Davis of Poteet made the score 26-0 at the half.

Shakur Morrow created some hope for Forney with his second interception of the night on the opening drive of the second half. That is about where the highlights stopped for the Jackrabbits. Other than Rhett Coleman’s 28 yard field goal in the 4th quarter to prevent a Pirate shutout, the second half was filled with negative plays, interceptions, a fumble, more penalties, and an inept offense that struggled to gain yards all night long.

Forney finished with 205 yards of offense and a rushing average of 1.8 yards per play. Those numbers just won’t get it done against many teams, much less a team as strong as the Pirates.

Forney (0-2 in District, 1-4 season) moves into the softer part of the district schedule with hopes of salvaging their season (and any hope of making the playoffs) with a game against the Creekview Mustangs (1-1 in District, 3-2 season) Friday night at City Bank Stadium.
