SCURRY, Texas — A Scurry-Rosser High School football coach was struck on the sidelines Friday night — bringing an early end to their football game against Malakoff High School.

The Scurry-Rosser coach was reportedly struck when a play went out of bounds. The play knocked the coach off his feet and he struck his head on the ground. A CareFlite medical helicopter was called to the football stadium and later transported the coach to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in reported critical condition.

The coach was identified by family and friends as coach Mark Bachtel. "Bachtel is still in critical condition after suffering multiple skull fractures and severe head trauma," Scurry-Rosser ISD Boardmember Nancy Duggan told inForney.com on Saturday morning. Bachtel will undergo several tests over the next couple of days, according to Duggan.

A prayer vigil is scheduled for Saturday night at the Scurry-Rosser High School football field at 7 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to wear green at the vigil and at school on Monday, according to a statement from Scurry-Rosser ISD.

The game was called with more than six minutes remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter. Malakoff was leading 73-27.

Players, parents, and coaches took to social media calling for prayers for the coach and his family. "Please continue praying," Duggan said. "The Bachtel family appreciates all the calls, texts, prayers, and love being poured out."

A request has been made for additional details with the Scurry-Rosser Independent School District.

This is a developing story.
