TERRELL, Texas — In their final district matchup of the season, the Terrell Tigers (8-2, 5-1) put an end to what would have been the Van Vandals (9-1, 5-1) second 10-0 season in three years and clinched a co-district title in the process.
With the win, Terrell becomes the No. 2 seed for District 8-4A followed by Kaufman and Crandall and achieve back-to-back district titles and playoff runs — previously competing in Class 5A.
The Tigers scored 9 points in the first quarter on a safety with 10:26 on the clock and a Kendrick Richardson 12-yard scamper with just under 7 on the clock. The Vandals responded with just under 3 on the clock with a Garrett Moseley 12-yard pass to Isiah Allred. The Tigers led at half, 9-7.
Terrell’s Tiyea Zanders connected with Jarvis Walker on a 21-yard pass with 10:20 on the clock in the third quarter and Bryan Lara connected with a 26-yard field goal with 10:24 on the clock in the fourth quarter to extend the scoring gap to 19-7. A late game touchdown and clock-running strategy clinched a No. 1 seed for the Vandals in an eventual 19-14 scoreboard.
Terrell will face North Lamar in the first round of the playoffs at a yet to be determined site and time.
The Kaufman Lions and Crandall Pirates are also preparing for the playoffs next week. Kaufman clinched a co-district title with Terrell’s defeat of Van.
Kaufman (7-3, 5-1) will play District 7-4A opponent Texarkana Liberty Eylau in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Longview.
Crandall (4-6, 2-4) will play District 7-4A champions Paris on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Allen’s Eagle Stadium.
