FORNEY, Texas — The third-ranked District 15-5A West Mesquite Wranglers (6-3, 5-1) narrowly defeated district opponent North Forney High School (4-5, 1-5) in an impressive show of late-game defense on Friday night at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium.
FORNEY, Texas — The third-ranked District 15-5A West Mesquite Wranglers (6-3, 5-1) narrowly defeated district opponent North Forney High School (4-5, 1-5) in an impressive show of late-game defense on Friday night at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium.
After much back and forth, the Wranglers scored their game-winning touchdown on a 60-yard kickoff return to end the third quarter. Their defense would go on to stop four fourth quarter drives — one of which came on the heels of a North Forney interception.
The scoring began late in the first quarter with West Mesquite’s Angel Chavarria connecting on a 25-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter, North Forney’s Jaylon Smith completed a drive with a 6-yard pass reception for a touchdown off the arm of Colby Suits who would go on to throw for 253 yards on the night. West Mesquite answered just two minutes later with Curtis Williams rushing for a 22-yard touchdown sending the Wranglers into half time with a 9-7 lead.
The Falcon’s regained the lead, if only for a moment, with 6 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a Suits 39-yard pass to Jackson Ennels. West Mesquite’s Damarcus Crockett returned the kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown to end the third quarter and give the Wranglers the final lead on the night.
Williams would go on to score another touchdown on a 5-yard carry with 5:27 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Wranglers stopped four Falcon drives in the fourth quarter and grounded any momentum gained when the Falcons intercepted a Connor Neill pass early in the quarter.
The Falcons accumulated 320 total yards as compared to the Wranglers 242 total yards. Each team forced two turnovers.
North Forney’s Calvin Ribera led he team in rushing with 79 yards on 18 carries. Ennels led the receiving with 104 yards on 5 receptions and a touchdown, Barclay Ford caught 8 for 98 yards, Jordan Carroll caught 5 for 43 yards, and Smith caught a lone 6-yard pass for a touchdown.]
The Falcons prepare for their final game of the season against cross-town rival Forney High School (3-6, 1-5) in the 5th annual Unity Bowl next Friday at Forney’s City Bank Stadium.
Both teams will appear in the Unity Parade on Saturday at 10 a.m. through historic downtown Forney.
