FORNEY, Texas – Despite early momentum from the North Forney High School Falcons volleyball team, Forney High School stole the first set, battled for the second, and clinched the third in a three-and-out sweep of cross-town rival North Forney at home.
North Forney had a dominating first set but gave it up late in the game after a five-point lead nearly the entire game. North Forney was leading 23-17 when Forney closed the gap and tied the game at 24-24 before ultimately winning the first set 27-25.
The second set was led by North Forney again, this time by a smaller margin of about a one-point lead until the game tied at 18-18. Both teams battled back and forth amid deafening chants from each teams' student section. Forney broke the tie and didn't look back, winning the second set 25-23.
Forney clinched the third set with a ten-point uncontested run which gave them a 10-point lead mid-game at 16-6. North Forney was able to close the gap to a one-point game late in the set, 22-23, but Forney clinched the next two points for a best-of-five three-set sweep.
On what changed going into the third set, Forney High School Head Coach Kristal Thornton told inForney.com, “Just calming down. The biggest thing was there was so much stuff going on and everybody was yelling. This is the biggest crowd we've ever had.”
Thornton said there wasn't one player who stood out, but a team effort that led to the win. “We had some great blocks, some great digs, some great hits. My freshman stepped up, my seniors stepped up. But all together, if we didn’t play together, we wouldn’t have won that game and especially not in three.”
Next Tuesday, September 23, 2014, Forney has a home-game matchup against Terrell and North Forney has an away-game matchup against South Garland.
Stats will be uploaded as they are received from the coaches.
