FORNEY, Texas — The West Mesquite High School Wranglers (4-3, 3-1) mounted a second-half stranglehold to come out on top of a 30-14 victory over the Forney High School Jackrabbits (3-4, 1-3) on Thursday night at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium.

West Mesquite scored two touchdowns in the first quarter on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Conner Neill to Tra’zavion Johnson and a 1-yard rush from Curtis Williams to close a 9-play Wrangler drive.

Going into the second quarter, Forney punted on their next drive, forced a fumble on the return, and went on to score back-to-back touchdowns to even the score at 14-14. Those two touchdowns came from a Devon Rideaux 18-yard pass to Brendan Vaughn and a 3-yard run from Jaylon Hutchings.

Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits, the Wranglers clinched a 43-yard Angel Chavarria field goal just before halftime to take the deciding lead. The Wranglers would go on to score on a 3-yard Williams rush in the third quarter and a 60-yard Williams run in the fourth quarter to finish the game up 30-14.

West Mesquite amassed 432 total yards compared to the Jackrabbits 242 on the night. The Jackrabbits forced 3 turnovers — two lost fumbles and an interception — compared to the Wranglers sole interception.

Rideaux passed for 90 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another 65 yards on 17 carries. Hutchins rushed for 87 yards on 15 carries. The Jackrabbits only completed four passes on the night — 33 yards to Spencer Harrison, 29 yards to Peyton Johnson, 18 yards and a touchdown for Vaughn, and 10 yards for Brock Rooney.
