FM 548 Expansion Kicks Off — What Commuters Need to Know

FM 548 Construction Project Kicks Off September 8, 2023

In a significant development for local commuters, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) commenced the long-awaited widening of FM 548 from Highway 80 to Windmill Farms Boulevard on September 8, 2023. This construction project is set to transform the roadway into a more accommodating 4 to 6 lanes, addressing the growing traffic demands as Forney’s population continues to surge.

Project Overview

The FM 548 expansion is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete, with various phases planned to minimize disruptions to drivers. Residents and commuters should prepare for potential delays, lane shifts, and detours during this period. Local officials are urging drivers to plan for extra travel time as the project progresses.

Current Activities and Progress

As of now, several key activities are underway:

  • Design Updates: A schematic revision to improve the intersection configuration at Wiser Road was submitted to TxDOT on July 25, 2023. The final schematic review and approval are pending.

  • Ongoing Coordination: Coordination meetings with TxDOT are ongoing to ensure smooth progress and resolve any issues that arise.

  • Right-of-Way (ROW) Adjustments: TxDOT has requested modifications to the proposed right-turn lane at southbound FM 548 at College Avenue. The design has been revised to incorporate an 11-foot lane to eliminate the need for proposed ROW acquisition.

  • Environmental Reports: Jacobs Engineering has made substantial progress with environmental reports, successfully securing approval for thirteen reports to date. A public hearing is anticipated in early 2026.

  • Utilities Coordination: As construction begins, several utility companies have confirmed their readiness, including the City of Forney and People’s Telephone Co-Op. However, some utilities, including AT&T and Atmos, are in the process of relocating their services, with clearance expected by mid-September 2025.

Construction Details

The construction was officially let on March 5, 2025, with Granite Construction Company winning the bid at $80,359,417—19.1% below the initial engineer's estimate. The project will involve 774 working days and is expected to have 32 months of barricades in place.

The anticipated start date for construction was set for September 8, 2025, following a pre-construction meeting held earlier that month. The project is projected to be completed by March 30, 2026, which will greatly enhance the commuting experience for Forney residents.

Community Impact

With Forney's population having more than doubled to over 35,000 in the last decade, many residents rely on FM 548 to commute to Dallas for work and recreation. As the construction unfolds, local officials will continue to provide updates and address residents’ concerns to ensure that the project meets the needs of the community.
