AUSTIN—According to data, 25% of Texas traffic fatalities occur in energy-producing areas. TXDOT has launched a new campaign titled “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” to reduce traffic fatalities in these regions.
“In 2023, more than 80,000 traffic crashes occurred in Texas’ five main energy regions—the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, Barnett Shale, Anadarko Basin and the Haynesville/Bossier Shale,” stated a release from TXDOT. “Those crashes tragically resulted in 1,081 people killed, accounting for 25% of the state’s total traffic fatalities.”
The release noted that speed and driver inattention were the top two contributing factors in energy-producing regions.
TXDOT recommends driving safe speeds, following posted speed limits, and adjusting speed to match the flow of traffic to reduce risks. Additionally, TXDOT recommends drivers stay alert and focus 100% on driving, give large trucks plenty of space and maintain a safe following distance, obey all traffic laws, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“To help get the word out, TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart” campaign will showcase an interactive traffic safety exhibit at high school football games in the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford Shale. The mobile exhibit will feature quizzes, games and video displays that remind motorists to slow down and stay focused when driving in energy regions.”
